We Built Our Own Plant Shelves and It Was Easier Than You Think 🌿🪵

If you have been dreaming about a styled plant wall but keep putting it off, this one is for you. Over the weekend Byron and I finally tackled building and hanging 6 custom wood plant shelves throughout our home and honestly it was one of the easiest home projects we have ever done. Here is exactly how we did it plus a peek at how they all turned out.

Step 1: Plan Before You Shop

Before we even left the house I walked through each room and decided exactly where I wanted each shelf to go. Then I measured the length I wanted each one to be and wrote every single measurement down. We walked into Lowe's with a complete list and zero guessing. That made everything so much smoother.

💡 Pro tip: Measure the length you want each shelf before you go so you are not doing math in the lumber aisle. Write it all down and bring the list with you!

Step 2: Get Your Wood Cut at Lowe's

We went to Lowe's (and I cannot stress this enough, Lowe's) with our list of measurements and they cut every board right there in the store. Fast, easy and free. We picked up our black hairpin brackets while we were there too, loaded everything onto the cart and headed home. No drama, no wasted trips, no stress.

Step 3: Stain the Wood

Once we got home we stained the boards and this was honestly the step I was most nervous about. It ended up being the easiest part. You just need a small can of stain! Choose your color. One coat was all it took and the color came out absolutely gorgeous. A rich warm wood tone that goes with everything. We let it dry completely before moving on.

💡 Pro tip: Do your staining outside or in the garage with something underneath the boards to protect your floor. One coat really is enough if you apply it evenly!

Step 4: Hang the Brackets and Shelves

Once the stain dried we installed the black hairpin brackets on the wall and set the shelves in place. Six shelves total, all up in one afternoon. The black brackets against the stained wood look so clean and intentional. It is giving mid-century modern meets indoor jungle and I am completely obsessed.

💡 Pro tip: Use a level! Even if it looks straight to your eye, a level will catch any slight tilt before you load it up with plants. A crooked shelf becomes very obvious once things are on it.

Step 5: Style With Your Plants (The Fun Part)

Once the shelves were up it was time for the best part - styling! I moved plants around until everything felt right, added some of my favorite décor pieces and of course added plant wraps to make the plant stems extra special. This is where the shelves really came to life.

I styled shelves in almost every room of the house. The bedroom, the living room, the dining area, the vanity area and even the closet. Each one has its own personality but they all feel cohesive because of the matching wood and brackets.

The Finished Result

Six shelves, one weekend, zero stress and honestly one of my favorite home projects we have ever done. Each room feels more intentional, more styled and more like us. Seeing my plants elevated and displayed with their little wraps on just makes my whole heart happy.

If you have been putting this off please just go do it. Measure your walls, go to Lowe's, grab some wood and brackets and make your plant babies a proper home. They deserve it!🪴🪩
